| 한국의 의회는 1년 동안 휴가 기간을 제외하고 상·하반기 정기회·임시회의 회기로 열린다. 50일 이내에 회기가 열리며 50일 이상부터는 정기회와 임시회가 종료된다. 1년 내내 회기에 있고, 회기중에는 불체포특권이 있으므로, 사실상 의원은 임기 내내 불체포특권이 있다.

| 헌법 제45조에 따르면 정기회는 법률이 정하는 바에 의하여 매년 상·하반기 동안 1회 열리며 임시회는 대통령 또는 의회재적의원 4분의 1 이상의 요구에 의하여 집회된다고 명시되어 있다. 또 임시회의 집회를 요구할 때에는 기간과 집회요구의 이유를 명시하여야 한다고 설명되어 있다.

| === 의회폭력 논란 ===

| 국평이 민의원으로 바뀌고 나서도 이른바 의회폭력 논란은 이어졌다. 202년 4월 자유당 [[신병호]] 의원이 '군가산제법'을 발의했으나 민주당, 정의당 의원들의 반발이 거세진 상태였다. 그런데 신 의원이 발의가 끝나고 민주당 의원들에게 "자기들은 민주의 민 자도 모르면서"라고 삿대질을 하자, 일부 의원들이 박차고 나와 신 의원을 가격하는 등이 벌어졌다. 결국 자유당 의원들과의 몸싸움이 벌어져 10여명의 의원들이 부상을 입었으며 의장은 군가산제법을 폐기함에 따라 종결된다.

| 23대 민의원은 자유당발 여권과 민주당발 야권이 자주 부딪혔고, 심지어 민의원 의원이 사망하는 경우까지 생겨났다. 하지만 좌파당-정의당 의원들의 '노동법' 개정안 발의에서 촉발된 폭력 사태가 오히려 의회폭력이 정치적 이슈가 된다. 당시 자유당 의원들은 출입을 못하게 민의원의장실은 물론 민의원 본회의장까지 막아 "좌파야권 물러가라"를 외쳤고 참의원에서는 자유당 의원들이 노동법 개정안을 막기 위해 아예 본회의에 들어가서 참의원의장 사퇴와 노동법 개정안 철회를 요구했다. 이에 민주당 의원들은 노동법 개정안에 지지했지만 곧 자유당 의원들과 충돌하여 아수라장이 되었다. 하지만 본회의장까지 사태가 커지게 되고, 사태는 사흘동안 이어졌다. 일부 의원들은 지렛대는 물론이고 망치, 각목 등을 이용해 위협하며 서로를 몰아내려 했지만 노동자들은 물론 국민들이 민의원의사당 앞에서 양측의 폭력적 행보를 비판하고 노동법 개정안 시위를 벌이게 된다. 이후 사태가 진정되고 많은 시민들이 참석한 상태에서 표결에 들어갔지만 이번에는 날치기 통과라고 주장하며 다시 폭발해버렸고 많은 시민들의 반발 속에 해당 법안을 두고 충돌이 이어졌다.

| 결국 자유당과 민주당 모두 지지율에 큰 타격을 입고 214년 24대 민의원이 시작되면서 해당 법안은 자동 폐기되었다. 이 때문에 개혁보수당은 자유당과 민주당을 비판하는 논평을 올렸고, 24대 민의원 당시 국민의당과 대한정의당, 사회당, 현대당, 시민민주당, 녹색당 등 야권 의원들이 의회선진화법을 추진하는 기자회견을 열었다.

| 이후 민주당발 여권은 의회폭력을 막겠다는 목적으로 '의회선진화법'을 추진했지만 이에 반대하는 자유당 의원들은 의회선진화법 폐기를 요구했다. 자칫 23대 민의원처럼 강력한 의회폭력이 발생할 수 있었지만 8시간 만에 자유당, 공화당, 태양당 의원들이 불참하고 다수 의원들의 찬성으로 통과되었다.
