개요

해는 1982년, 세계는 박수소리와 비명소리, 소음과 굉음, 그리고 노이즈 소리가 뒤엉켜 있습니다.

1939년, 제 2차 세계대전은 시작되었습니다. 독일은 선전하여 순식간에 서유럽을 집어삼키고, 1941년에 소련을 침공하기에 이르렀습니다. 그러나, 소련은 만만한 상대가 아니었으며, 1944년을 계기로 독일은 점점 밀리기 시작했습니다. 영국과 미국은 1946년 칼레 상륙작전을 실행했으나, 독일군이 이미 작전을 알아내어 실패로 끝나고 말았습니다. 1949년 소련이 베를린을 함락하자 히틀러는 자살하고, 독일은 곧 항복합니다. 그러나, 동방에는 그보다도 더 위험한 적이라고 할 수도 있는 일본 제국이 아직까지도 살아숨쉬고 있었습니다. 히로시마와 나가사키에 원자폭탄을 투하했으나 일본은 항복하지 않고 그는 오히려 그들이 더 똘똘 뭉치게 되는 계기가 되었습니다. 결국 연합국은 몰락 작전을 시행해 일본을 항복하게 만드는 데에 성공했습니다.

1950년, 결국 사람들은 제 2차 세계대전의 공포로부터 해방되었습니다. 그러나, 양측 모두 엄청난 피해를 입은 상태였기에 그들은 그 후 몇 년 간은 서로 원조도 하고, 지원도 하며, 평화롭게 공존해 갔습니다. 그 즉시 사회주의와 자본주의, 독재와 민주주의라는 극명한 이념 차이에 부딪혀 평생 갈 것만 같았던 연합국은 해체되고, 소비에트 연방과 미합중국 간의 냉전이 벌어졌습니다.

몇 년 간은 조용히 자신의 일을 해결하며 살아왔지만, 1960년대에 들어서 그들은 간섭주의 정책을 내걸기 시작했고, '해방'과 '도덕'을 명목으로 다른 나라를 간섭하고, 개입하고, 심지어는 침공하는 추태까지 벌어집니다. 1960~70년대의 급격한 신 문물의 발달과 1970년대의 엄청난 경제 위기 및 석유 파동, 그로 인한 극단주의의 대두로 인해 지구의 미래는 어둡기만 합니다...
전세계는 조심스러운 균형 위에 불안하게 서 있습니다. 과연 이들은 새천년을 볼 때까지 살아남을 수 있을까요, 혹은 이는 그저 종말의 전주곡일 뿐일까요?
