| 임진왜란 이래 쓰시마 섬은 오랫동안 조선의 통치를 겪었던지라, 일본 입장에서도 제 1차 동아시아 전쟁 이후 반환받았다지만 한국인들의 영향력이 무시할 수 없을 수준으로 큰 지역이었다. 그러던 중 1944년 한성 내전에서 패배한 [[김창암]]이 대마도로 배를 타고 측근들과 함께 도주해오자, 한국에 대한 정치적인 영향력 확보 및 대마도의 애매함 처리 용으로 김창암을 써먹을 생각을 한 일본제국 정부는 쓰시마를 '한반도를 탈환할때까지' 대한호국회를 위시한 한국 파시스트 세력에게 대여해주는 협의를 체결, 곧 새로운 정부인 대한 공화국이 쓰시마에 수립되었다.

| 일본 제국 정부는 이 괴뢰정권으로 한국에 삐라를 뿌리거나 해양에서 정권재수립을 강요하는 등의 위협을 통해, 대한 공화국의 존속 기간동안 대한국 해역에서 치안 불안을 유도하려 하였으나 이미 전세가 역전된지 오래라 별 타격이 없었고, 결국 1945년 초반에는 본토 방위에도 급급했던 일본제국이라 대마도의 대한 공화국은 사실상 방치상태로 거듭났다.

| 이후 일본제국 정부로부터 근근히 보급만 받으면서 버티던 대한공화국 정부는 1945년 원폭투하로 일본제국이 완전히 항복하자 해산됬으며, 최종적으로 수뇌부들이 사살되거나 전범재판으로 연행되면서 완전히 끝을 맞이했다.
